The Stickney Veterans Memorial Monument was dedicated on November 11, 1996.

In the summer of 1995, former mayor Frank J. Baley, now deceased, authorized the formation of the Stickney Veterans Memorial Monument Commission and appointed Arthur E. Rawers, village clerk and a World War II veteran, to be the organizer and chairman of that commission.  The purpose, of course, was to build a monument to honor veterans, both male and female, of all wars and conflicts and all branches of service, including the Merchant Marine from World War II.

The commission when it was finally organized consisted of the following members: Arthur E. Rawers, chairman; James Bernard, vice-chairman; Linda Philippon, secretary; Erwin Hajek, treasurer and the following committee members: Dan Aranda, Monty Horne, Jennie LaGreco, Marion Nichols, Ken Nichols, Beverly Pohanka, William Higgens, Vi Bachielli, George Javurek, Edwin Noska, Mary Ellen Perost, George Riha, Karl Gaeger, Evelyn Krtatochvil, George Philippon and Dennis Zatecka.

The monument was built at no cost to taxpayers.  The entire structure was funded by donations of time, labor and money.  Corporations and businesses donated $1,000.00 and veterans $500.00 for their names to be put on the monument.  To this day, no taxpayer money is used to maintain and upkeep the monument since names are continually put on the monument at Memorial Day and Veterans Day services.  The monument was designed so that names may be put on for years to come.

For additional information, Arthur Rawers may be contacted at the village hall or by calling 708-749-4400.
